Amidst rising tensions and unrest seen across various parts of the country, Bedfordshire's Police and Crime Commissioner has reinstated the county's readiness to handle any potential disturbances.

Protesters believed to be linked to the far right planned to march the streets of towns and cities across the country last night, including in Bedford, but minimal disruption's been reported.

Hundreds of anti-racism campaigners took to the streets in counter protests.

The previous week of violence was sparked by misinformation spread online following the murders of three children in Southport.

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire, John Tizard, said: “There is no excuse whatsoever for the criminal behaviour we're seeing across the country."

"We cannot be complacent.”

He reassured that Bedfordshire Police are fully prepared to protect the community, especially vulnerable groups facing racist and Islamophobic threats.

The PCC has been engaging in collaborative efforts with various agencies, including local authorities, the police, and the Fire Rescue Service to reassure the public.

He said: “We pride ourselves in working with all communities throughout the period. It’s our duty to stand together with all communities in the county and do everything we can to protect them and reassure them."

“One of the great strengths of Bedfordshire is its diversity of culture, ethnicity, and religion. It’s important that nobody in the county feels unsafe or discriminated against.”

“I have lived in Bedfordshire for nearly fifty years, and there’s a real strong sense of social cohesion and common purpose. This gives us the resilience to hold away those who may come to cause trouble.”

Mr Tizard urged residents to rely on official channels and avoid misinformation that could fuel fear and anxiety.

He further warned against taking part in any counter-demonstrations, which could escalate tensions and divert police resources.

He said: “It doesn't take much for some counter-protests to lead to clashes with the police. The police are equipped both in terms of their professional training and legal powers to deal with this. We, as citizens, are not.”

“Please be reassured, the police are on your side. Local authorities are on your side. Just stay calm, and everything will be done to ensure you’re protected as far as humanly possible.”

With these measures in place, Bedfordshire authorities hope to maintain peace and protect the community amid the ongoing national unrest.
