A driver from Bedfordshire has been sentenced after being stopped by police officers in Brighton and found with a range of weapons, including a sawn-off shotgun.

Osiris Fleming-Rey, aged 27, was behind the wheel of a black Honda Civic with false registration plates on the A23 southbound towards the city. The vehicle was believed to have been stolen. Officers from the Tactical Firearms Unit, Roads Policing Unit, and Specialist Enforcement Unit performed a tactical stop on the vehicle in Viaduct Road.

Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered a sawn-off shotgun, as well as a knife and a lock knife. Fleming-Rey, of Nelson Road, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, was arrested and taken into custody. He was later charged following an investigation by Brighton CID.

Fleming-Rey stood trial at Guildford Crown Court in September, facing charges of possessing a firearm and two counts of possessing a knife or bladed article. He was found guilty of all charges. On 10 October, he was sentenced to five years in prison.

The incident occurred on 24 November last year at around 10pm, when police officers stopped the vehicle after suspicions were raised. Fleming-Rey initially told officers that he had "borrowed" the car from a "friend", but could not recall any further details about the individual.

It was revealed that Fleming-Rey was in breach of a suspended sentence order imposed in January 2023 for possession of a bladed article. The court ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the weapons, and a Deprivation Order was issued for the suspected stolen vehicle.

Following the sentencing, TFU Inspector Oli Fisher said: "This case demonstrated the teamwork and professionalism of officers to ensure the vehicle was safely stopped. The vehicle was then searched, and weapons were found. These were seized by police. We are pleased that a dangerous offender and the weapons he carried have been taken off the streets."
