Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue issue fireworks safety message
Celebrations involving fireworks are due to take place across the county this weekend
Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) is encouraging residents to prioritise safety with fireworks, recommending organised displays over home use.
The reminder follows the explosion in the Cleat Hill area of Bedford on 19 October, in which a man died, and a woman lost her life this week in hospital to severe injuries.
High levels of natural gas continue to be recorded in the area, where residents were evacuated and remain in emergency accommodation, posing a serious threat.
BFRS Prevention Manager, Station Commander Matt Hyland, said: "The period around Bonfire Night and Diwali can be busy for our firefighters and Fire Control.
"We are ready, willing, and able to respond to incidents, but we are asking people to help by considering alternative ways to celebrate safely."
Mr Hyland explained that organised events are often safer and more affordable options, reducing the likelihood of accidental fires and injuries.
For those choosing to celebrate with fireworks at home, he advised caution.
"Only buy fireworks from a reputable, licensed seller and make sure they have a CE safety mark," he said, adding that alcohol and fireworks should not be combined and urging people to "never return to a firework once it’s been lit."
Rob Davis, Station Commander at Luton Fire Station, reinforced the message and said: "Consider your surroundings. So where they go up, they're going to land. Are they going to do any damage in the close proximity?"
To reduce risks further, BFRS also advises residents to avoid building bonfires at home.
BFRS’s tips for a safe celebration at home include keeping fireworks stored safely, supervising children closely, using fireworks one at a time, and being mindful of surroundings.
