Train companies operating in Bucks, Beds and Herts are urging passengers not to travel tomorrow, as Storm Eunice is set to batter the region.

Winds over 50mph are expected, with an amber weather warning in place for the three counties.

Network Rail is also asking people across the UK to reconsider any plans to travel, and any routes that are running will be operating reduced services.

David Heathfield, head of corporate affairs at Chiltern Railways, told Greatest Hits Radio: "We need to put an emergency speed restriction on our trains just to make sure we're safe. There's always the chance that trees do come down onto the line. That means that we're likely to have to cancel services at very short notice.

"It will take longer to make journeys and there will be disruption when we have incidents like debris blowing onto the line or trees coming down, so really do encourage people to travel at a different time.

"We'll be doing everything we can to run the best service in the circumstances, but our number one priority is safety. We need to make sure our colleagues and our customers are safe at all times."

Angie Doll, Interim Chief Operating Officer, Govia Thameslink Railway, said: “Due to the significant impacts expected from Storm Eunice, passengers are advised not to travel on Southern, Great Northern and Thameslink routes on Friday 18 February.

“Extremely high winds are forecast meaning that 50mph speed restrictions will be in place across the entire network during the day. We expect there to be significant disruption to services and customers may need to change trains to complete their journeys.

“Customers that have already purchased tickets for tomorrow will be able to use them to travel today or Saturday instead and this ticket acceptance is in place with all train operators.”
