Aylesbury United have spoken out against plans for their former ground.

The Ducks moved out of Buckingham Road in 2006 - now the site's earmarked for more homes.

The Club say they're opposed to leisure land being taken away when there's more demand for it.

In a statement released this morning, Aylesbury United said:

"Whilst Aylesbury United are, of course, former tenants of the site to which this application refers, we are not objecting on the basis of any benefit or dis-benefit to our Club.

"We are however a local grass roots football club and like all such clubs in the area feel passionately about our sport and believe that it should be available to as large a number of people as possible to play or to watch."

The Buckingham Road stadium has been abandoned for 14 years.

They say that extra housing in the area has meant both an increase in need for leisure facilities, but also extra pressure on the flood plain here.

Their groundsman used to have to put a lot of effort into keeping the playing surface usable, the club said.

"This should not prevent leisure use of the land but would have a serious effect on commercial development which, by definition, would reduce the area's ability to absorb flood water.

"This land was designated for leisure use in the 1980s and its unsuitability for housing is recognised in the Aylesbury Vale Local Plan.

"We believe that the Council should support its own Plan, reject this application and retain the land for leisure use."

A decision is expected from Buckinghamshire Council by the end of the year.
