A major international appeal has been launched to identify a young woman who was hit by one or more cars on the A1 near Baldock in Hertfordshire in 1975.

The driver that killed her has also never been identified.

The woman was last seen at around 5:30 in the morning, about 45 minutes before she was killed on February 18 1975. It's thought the 17 to 23-year-old might have be travelling to London.

Where was she from?

According to the charity Locate International after an appeal in June 2010, a couple came forward to say they recognised her. It was later revealed they had met her in 1972 while she was hitch-hiking on London's North Circular during a thunderstorm.

The couple offered her shelter and she apparently stayed with the couple for around six months and in that time revealed she was from Paris, or at least nearby.

Dave Grimstead, CEO of the charity, said she also revealed to the couple that: "she had friends in Newquay and other parts of Cornwall."

In 1973 it's thought she relocated to Cambridge to study at a language school.

What did she look like?

It has also been said she had fair hair and hazel eyes, as well as a few distinguishing features including a scar on her right leg and a piercing in her right ear.

At the time of her death she was wearing a brown afghan coat, a waistcoat, blouse, jeans, and a scarf. Though she was not wearing any shoes or carrying a bag when found.

Appeal for people who knew her

Mr Grimstead is urging anyone to get in touch from the UK or France if they think they might know the identity of this woman.

He has stressed: "I think finding her name is so important for family and friends because we've resolved a case recently from 1975 and it makes such a difference to a family who've always wondered what happened to their loved one."

The charity is also appealing to anyone who might've seen her at Stotfold Social Club in Bedfordshire or at an industrial estate in Henlow where it's suspected she worked in a factory making souvenirs.
