Berkhamsted charity recommends positive affirmations for our mental health
Hectors House want people to try a daily affirmation
This Christmas we're being reminded of the benefits positive thoughts can have by a charity based in Berkhamsted.
Hectors House has been holding an 'Affirmation Advent' this December, to try and encourage people to look after themselves.
The goal is for people to focus on the affirmation of the day, whether its speaking it to themselves, writing it down of just thinking it.
Lotte Stringer, CEO of the charity, says its about people being kind to themselves:
"We wanted to raise awareness about showing yourself self compassion.
"Most of us are really good at building others up and being kind to others but we don't often offer the same kind words to ourselves.
"The power of positive affirmation is huge and it can massively benefit our mental health in a good way."
Each day an affirmation has been posted, for example 'I am courageous', 'I accept myself the way I am' and 'I believe in myself'.
Robert Stringer, is co-chair and co-founder of Hectors House.
He says its not about being positive all the time though:
"Sometimes we have to say to people 'Even if you don't believe it, even if you don't feel it say these affirmations' and understand they can make a big difference.
"This is a really difficult time and recent announcements have caused an increase of anxiety for lots of people.
"We have the power within ourselves to make some changes, even if we don't feel it."
Hectors House have also continuing sharing their library of calm, which is a catalogue of activities and information to help people struggling with their mental health.
