The Walsh family decided to take the jump and study degrees at the same university.

After a foundation year in Art Therapy, mum Esperanza is joining her son Asti, who is entering his second year of Mathematics at the University of Hertfordshire, alongside dad Daniel who is studying Sociology and Psychology.

Mr Walsh said: "I had a weird thought that, if you're going to University, why don't I?"

For the parents, it's like being given a second life.

"It's never too late to learn. I'm 73 years young..."

After recovering from several health issues, including a heart attack and open heart surgery, two hip replacements, and having suffered from long Covid, Mr Walsh decided to jump on the opportunity.

"It is never too late to learn. I'm 73 years young. Many of my friends think that I am absolutely bonkers, but you know what? This is the most fun I have had in years", said Mr Walsh.

Although being at university at a later stage of their life is bringing them an immense sense of accomplishment, Asti's parents are facing the same financial pressures as other students.

All three are paying for their studies with the help of student finance England, which covers their tuition fees.

Mum Esperanza is however having to balance full time employment alongside her degree, which can be tricky at times, but, she assured, is worth it.

Mr Walsh said: "When you exist on pension credit, there's not a lot of change leftover by the time you pay your rent, pay for your food, your gas and electricity. without the support of student finance, we would not have been able to do this."

The family are hoping more people who think twice about going to university will feel inspired by their story.
