Where does recycling go in Somerset once collected?
Half of all recycling collected in Somerset now stays in the county, with just two per cent being processed abroad.
The Somerset Waste Partnership have been outlining what happens once we put our bins out.
MD Mickey Green said: "We were the first in the country to be completely transparent about where everybody's recycling goes and we're really pleased that last year we had the best results we've ever seen.
"98 per cent of everything we collected from recycling at the kerbside at our recycling centres - it all stayed in the UK.
"That's thanks to our crews out on the street. Thanks to the staff at recycling centres - but most importantly it's thanks to everybody at home sorting their recycling, putting it in the right place.
"That means we can keep it in the UK and recycle it properly.
"Half of everything we collect stays in Somerset. About 98 per cent stays in the UK, 99.4 of everything plastic stays in the UK - so that's really important to us and to everybody else because everybody's seen the horror stories.
"It's a really small amount (going abroad), the total amount we collected is about 137,000 tonnes.
"The reality is though reprocessors in the UK want quality material.
"Occasionally we have some small bits of material that don't quite meet those high quality standards or there isn't enough capacity in the UK and so they have to go abroad - but that's why we all put that effort in, the crews, the public to sorting material because that means we can keep it in the UK.
"Most people's black bin rubbish now goes to an energy from waste plant up in Avonmouth rather than going to a hole in the ground and storing up a problem for the future.
"I wish we didn't have any rubbish but it's the best place we can take it at the moment.
"The recycling goes to various places, half of it stays in Somerset so call of your food waste, all of your garden waste and then we'll move it around the country making sure we take it to the best possible place.
"Wherever we can keep it locally we do si, so if you give us back one of our broken recycling boxes for example that'll stay in Somerset too."
