A collection of military medals, stolen from a house in Bath city centre almost five years ago, have been given back to their owners.

Offenders, who have never been identified, also took jewellery during the incident in November 2015.

After checking auction records, police tracked-down the awards at a Surrey address.

Officers then returned the medals to the family they belong last weekend.

They were earned by the father of Leslie Waldron - the 82-year-old son passed away late last year.

Kate Carson, Leslie's daughter, continued searching for the items after her father's death.

"Joyous" is how she described the moment police returned the medals.

They included recognition for good conduct and distinguished service in the military.

'It means such a lot'

Kate added: “My dad was devastated when the medals were stolen. He had always been so proud of his father and wanted to pass the medals to his grandson.

“Up to the time he was taken ill in July 2019 it was a regular topic of conversation, and always a sad one. It means such a lot that these have been returned to the family as it was my dad’s deepest wish for them to be found.

“Sadly he passed away in November 2019, one week after they were auctioned, unbeknownst to us.

“It seems fitting one year on they are back with his family".
