A first-of-its kind service has been unveiled in Bridgwater to help new dads 'navigate the challenges of parenthood'.

Dr Joanne Nicholl, Designated Doctor Safeguarding Children at NHS Somerset, said: "We understand that babies don't come with an instruction manual, and that's why we're here to offer support to every new dad in the Bridgwater area.

"Whether it's your first or fifth child, each baby is unique, and parenting can be challenging, especially when facing other life struggles. Our goal is to ensure that all new dads feel supported during this transformative time.

"Mothers have a lot of support available to them when they find out they are expecting a baby. We noticed a gap in support available for fathers.

"Having a baby is a wonderful thing, but it is also very challenging, so we are piloting this scheme which provides an opportunity for Dads to talk through how they are finding being a parent and support them to access help if it is needed.

"This is also a great opportunity to share some important public health messages. By taking part Dads can help us design a potential longer term service across Somerset."

The pilot is currently running in Bridgwater and the aim is to extend this service to all new dads across Somerset in the future.

"We want to support Dads to be the best they possibly can be. We know fathers play a hugely important role in children’s lives and offering a bit of support could help people coping when things are tough.

"We want to share some advice about coping with crying and safe sleep, give Dads somewhere confidential to talk about how they are finding being a parent and let them know what support is available if they need it. Mums already get this support, it is time we extended it to Dads as this will help families to thrive."

To kick off this project, NHS Somerset is offering a 30-minute appointment with the health coach team at the Victoria Park Health and Wellbeing Hub. These sessions are open to all new fathers registered with a GP in Bridgwater practices, namely Cannington, Cranleigh Gardens, East Quay, North Petherton, Polden, Redgate, Somerset Bridge, Taunton Road, and Quantock.

Appointments can be booked by calling 01278 720270, with flexibility for scheduling on Saturdays and evenings to accommodate working parents, online appointments are available for those that cannot travel.

The project encourages booking around the fourth week of the baby's life, but alternative times are also available.

"Babies are welcome to attend the appointment with their dads, and we've ensured convenient facilities such as changing rooms, free parking, and disabled access at the Victoria Park Health and Wellbeing Hub," added Sammy Wright, Bridgwater Health and Wellbeing Coach.

"We are committed to maintaining confidentiality and treating every individual with the utmost care. If help is needed, our 'Unbreakable Men' project supporting mental health can also be introduced."
