University of Bath to expand "Read-cycle" scheme to Kenya
The scheme provides educational textbooks to developing countries
The University of Bath initiative ‘Readcycle Bath’, has expanded its scheme to Kenya, after donating management and engineering textbooks to the Moi University in Eldoret.
The idea for the scheme was thought up by Professor Dr Teslim Bukoye and his team, when the department came across the surplus textbooks, after moving offices at the School of Management at the University.
He said they were delighted to be able to support the students at Moi University in Kenya and are hoping the books will encourage knowledge and academic excellence in the field.
It has already been rolled out in Nigeria, with great success, and has plans to reach out to other countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the middle east.
Professor Abraham Mulwo, the Dean of the School of Information Sciences at Moi University, said: “Readcycle’s support will enrich our resources and contribute to the education and development of our students and faculty.
“The donated books will be instrumental in expanding the scope of our curriculum, facilitating research, and nurturing the intellectual growth of our students and faculty.”
Dr Bukoye, who is also Director of International Exchanges for the University, said they wanted to support students and universities in low- and middle-income countries by improving education, and reducing inequality and poverty.
They're hoping to raise further money for the scheme, which would allow them to ship more of these vital learning resources to other countries, where students could benefit from them.
“These books are not old,” Dr Bukoye said.
“Often management and engineering textbooks are re-issued regularly with small changes, so the contents remain valid.
“We have already shipped hundreds of management and engineering textbooks to Nigeria and I am confident we can do more.”
