PLANS for an 80-bedroom care home in Corsham have been thrown out after an appeal was turned down.

The proposals, by Dominic Lawson Bespoke Planning, were for a development on land to the north of Bath Road in Pickwick.

It was originally rejected last year because the applicants could not convince planning officers that there was “a genuine and evidenced need” for it.

Wiltshire Council also said that the proposed site is not accessible to local facilities and services and that the care home would be harmful to the Pickwick Conservation Area.

There were also concerns over whether the proposed development would preserve the settings of adjacent listed buildings.

'Fail to preserve or enhance the Pickwick Conservation Area'

In addressing the proposals, planning inspector J Wilson said the site is not allocated for development and lies beyond the boundary of Corsham, and therefore there must be exceptional circumstances in order to grant permission for a care home to be built, of which they decided there is not.

The inspector also agreed that the plans would “fail to preserve or enhance the character or appearance of the Pickwick Conservation Area”, and that the design of the building would do little to diminish this.
