The decision to permanently shut the iconic Oasis Leisure Centre has faced backlash from local stakeholders.

On Wednesday 18 November, the firm running the site confirmed that it won't re-open when lockdown restrictions are lifted.

GLL claims the facility, which was founded in 1976, is no longer "viable" - partially due to this year's restrictions.

Its lease will be returned to Seven Capital, the previous Oasis leaseholder.

'Not a decision we take lightly'

GLL's Regional Director for Swindon, Jamie Coleshill said: “We recognise the significant impact the closure of the Oasis will have on our customers; particularly the loss of the unique, albeit very tired, leisure pools.

“The closure of all leisure facilities across the UK for over five months due to the two lockdowns, coupled with the requirement to now operate at reduced capacity in order to comply with social distancing, has created extremely challenging operating conditions.

“Closing leisure facilities and reducing staff numbers is not a decision we take lightly. It is with great regret that we have come to this point, but we believe it is the only option available to us".

According to GLL, it will now look to redeploy 12 Oasis contracted staff to "alternative facilities".

'This is unacceptable'

The North Swindon MP has responded, calling the decision "unacceptable".

Justin Tomlinson says Seven Capital should act, as it has a "duty to provide leisure facilities".

If the closure plans come to fruition, he has called on Swindon Borough Council to reclaim the Oasis and save it from abandonment.

The announcement was also described as "really disappointing" by Swindon Borough Council's leader.

Cllr David Renard added: "I am personally very sad GLL has taken the decision to surrender its lease with Seven Capital on the Oasis, but COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on leisure providers and the leisure industry as a whole".

'A much loved local amenity'

Robert Buckland has told Greatest Hits Radio he contacted Seven Capital following the revelation, with the ambition of revitalising the Oasis.

He has urged the company to join forces with Swindon Borough Council, to refurbish the facility and re-open its doors after lockdown.

The MP for South Swindon, and Justice Secretary said: "(It's) a much loved local amenity.

"I'll carry on working to try and achieve a positive outcome, for all of us who know and love the Oasis".

In response, Seven Capital told us: "It is disappointing news for both the employees of the Oasis and the community of Swindon as the Oasis is a well-used and much-loved community facility.

"We are currently working with Swindon Borough Council to navigate this, through a difficult climate for the leisure industry as a whole, brought on by the pandemic this year".
