Drivers told to "avoid the area" as M4 closes between Bristol and Bath
It will be the last full weekend closure in the Badminton Road Bridge project
The M4 between junction 18 for Bath and junction 19 for the M32 is closed this weekend as work is carried out on Badminton Road Bridge.
The work starts on Friday 24th October and ends at 6am on Monday 27th.
National Highways is advising drivers to avoid travelling in the area.
"3,000 to 4,000 vehicles us this section of motorway every hour during peak weekend periods. We expect substantial disruption," said National Highways in a statement.
"We strongly advise you to avoid the area where possible and plan your journey for a different time."
The works are the third and final part of the project and will be the last full weekend closure.
A diversion 15-mile route is now in place, which you can view here.
"The closure marks a key milestone for the scheme," said a spokesperson for National Highways, "which will see eight steel beams, in groups of two, lifted into place across the motorway, marking the last full weekend closure of the M4 for this scheme and the final major stage of reconstruction."
"Once the beams have been lifted into place, the remainder of the new bridge will be constructed with minimal disruption to the motorway below and will be open to the public in early 2026.
"This is to ensure the road lanes and pavements are wide enough to meet today's safety standards. The barriers along the sides are higher to keep people walking and cycling safer."
