The west country is gaining a new visitor attraction this week.

Mary Shelley's House of Frankenstein will open in Bath on Monday (19/07) exploring the life and work of the woman who wrote what is considered the world's first science fiction novel.

She wrote much of the book in Bath in 1816.

Those behind the attraction say it "blurs the lines" between a museum and an "immersive experience".

"The whole house is very ambient, it's very multi sensory," co-founder Chris Harris told us.

"We have music and audioscapes in every room, we have evocative smells in the laboratory and popular culture just to give you a different sense of the environment you're in.

"Visually it's beautiful, the creative team have created some wonderful artefacts around the building."

He adds they have aimed to make it a "visceral experience", not full of blood and gore, but creating a sense of "foreboding".

"Within that we want to tell the story of Mary Shelley," he said.

"It's educational, hopefully it's fun, it's entertaining and just a little bit creepy."

The house explores Mary Shelley's story across four floors, including her complex past and the deaths of many close family members, the Frankenstein monster as Mary imagined and Frankenstein in popular culture.

There is also a frightening walk through experience in the basement, supposed to reveal the "unhallowed practices of a deranged scientist."

As an added feature an escape room will also open at the house later this summer.
