Full weekend closure planned for M4 near Bristol
Drivers are being warned of delays
The M4 near Bristol will be closed over the weekend while a trench is dug under the motorway.
National Highways is reminding road users of the planned closure, which will take place from 7pm Friday 18th October to 6am Monday 21st October in both directions between junctions 18 and 19.
The closure is predicted to cause substantial disruption as 3,000 to 4,000 vehicles use this section of the motorway every hour during peak weekend periods, and drivers are advised to plan alternative routes, avoid the area and anticipate delays.
National Highways Route Manager Sean Walsh said: “This is one of the busiest sections of motorway in the South West which is why we are reminding drivers to plan their journeys during the closure.
“We carefully plan our schemes to limit any inconvenience, but sometimes it's not possible to carry out the work that's needed without a closure.
“Our message for anyone who plans to travel on the M4 around Bristol is to avoid the area if you can – if that's not possible, allow yourself plenty of extra time to complete your journey via our signed diversion routes and expect delays.”
The closure has been planned to allow for work on the A432 Badminton Road bridge, which was constructed in 1966 and will be demolished next year after a structural investigation revealed deterioration and cracking to its underside.
The bridge was closed to traffic last year and is set to be replaced by spring 2026.
