From April 2021 a new law comes into force, placing a duty on local authorities to provide support and accommodation for domestic abuse victims and their children.

The £6m funding pot announced this week means councils in England can plan ahead.

Minister for Rough Sleeping and Housing, Kelly Tolhurst said:

"Survivors of domestic abuse need safe refuge in order to escape this heinous crime, and support to start to rebuild their lives."

"Councils already provide much needed support, but the landmark Domestic Abuse Bill will mean for the first time councils will have a duty to provide support in safe accommodation for anyone fleeing abuse."

The government says the bill will help thousands of people.

Kate Blackburn, Director of Public Health for Wiltshire has welcomed the money:

"We continue our work with partners to provide a support service for our domestic abuse victims and their families for when they need our help. From May this year we have also supported a 24-hour out of hours helpline so victims of domestic abuse or those who may be worried it is taking place can get hold of local help early."

"This additional funding will help us to build on this good work and we are looking forward to working closely with partners to ensure we are there to help the people who need us the most in the future."
