If you are driving home for Christmas today be aware there could be disruption.

The RAC estimates 5.3 million people will be travelling on the roads today after many people missed out on a proper Christmas last year, adding it could be the busiest Christmas getaway for five years.

A poll by Tansport Focus meanwhile has found only one in 10 people plan on using public transport.

Major roads are likely to be particularly busy between 11am and 2pm this Christmas Eve.

Problems are also expected to some extent on the train lines, with thousands of people expected to travel and hundreds of trains cancelled because of pandemic related staff shortages.

Some 370 engineering projects are being carried out on the railways in the coming days, which will also disrupt services.

CrossCountry trains will not call at Bristol Parkway between December 27 and 31.

Bristol Airport is anticipating it will be used by more than 100,000 passengers between December 21 and 31.

One of its busiest days will be December 27 when approximately 12,000 passengers will fly in or out of the airport.
