Joseph Choong has secured Great Britain's first ever men's modern pentathlon gold, making it Team GB's second triumph in the event at the Tokyo Olympic Games, after Kate French won gold in the women's competition.

The 26-year-old paced himself perfectly, keeping his composure in the final laser run. Having led throughout the competition, Choong held a 12-second lead going into the laser run but was overtaken by Egypt's Ahmed Elgendy after the final shooting round. Choong then sprinted to the finish ahead of Elgendy who took Silver.

Choong won the 2019 World Cup Final in Tokyo two years ago, but missed out on a medal in the laser run at Rio 2016. His gold comes just 24 hours after Kate French's victory in the women's competition and is Team GB's 20th gold in Tokyo.
