Bristol City Council is urging anyone planning on showing up to a protest in Bristol this weekend not to go.

Under current COVID-19 restrictions, large gatherings like a protest aren't allowed to take place.

If it does take place, the protest would follow two already seen in the city this week.

One on Sunday descended into violence as police continue to investigate while another protest on Tuesday saw arrests made, but not the level of violence seen days before.

In a statement released on Twitter, the council said: "We understand that some people are preparing to gather in large groups this weekend to protest. Whilst the right to protest is important to a democratic and fair society, we must do everything we can to protect our city during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Citizens of Bristol have worked so hard over the past twelve months, and recently in the current national lockdown, to follow the guidance and protect one another. People from all walks of life have helped out in big ways and small; checked in on one another, collected shopping for those who couldn't leave the house and done their bit by staying at home to drive down infection rates.

"We urge people planning to protest this weekend to please consider alternative, safer ways to express their concerns. To protect our health, our communities and one another."
