Organisers of the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta are announcing several changes for this year's event - saying with increasing costs and the weather getting more unpredictable, something has to give.

In a statement shared with Greatest Hits Radio overnight, Fiesta organisers say changes are needed to "overcome recent challenges" and ensure the main event in Ashton Court, can remain free to enter.

"The event has been a steadfast in the Bristol calendar for almost five decades, but in recent years has been affected just like the rest of the economy," the statement reads.

"Poor weather, covid, rising cost of living, inflation, challenges in the supply chain have added to financial pressures.

"Despite this the not-for-profit organisation are committed to the Fiesta’s founding constitution: To offer a free event for the city, that celebrates Bristol, supports the region’s economy, and brings the magic of hot air ballooning to everyone."

To reduce costs, this year's edition will last for three days from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 August, down from four in 2023.

The Fiesta will still include two Night Glow events, which will now take place consecutively on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Organisers say the commitment to maintain free entry is even more important, following an economic impact survey in 2023 which identified the Fiesta as Bristol's "most valuable outdoor event".

It injected, they say, £22.2 million into the city's economy last year alone.

A Fiesta week?

While the official Ashton Court event will last three days this year, organisers say extra ascents are also being planned between Monday 5 and Thursday 8 August from across Bristol, in a series of local launches.

Organisers did something similar in 2021 when, because covid restrictions prevented the traditional event in Ashton Court from happening, several smaller lifts took place all across Bristol instead, over a two week period.

"The new format will also allow organisers to reimagine the event, refocussing on what makes this event so special – the celebration of Bristol and its heritage links to the remarkable world of hot air ballooning," organisers said.

Further changes to be announced?

We're told more new features and programme highlights will be announced in the coming months, while organisers are holding a press event with Bristol media this morning, at the headquarters of Cameron Balloons.

We already know however, that plans appear to be in the works to enhance the site surrounding the launch area in Ashton Court, once the Fiesta proper gets underway.

"A revitalised vision will enable visitors experience the magic of ballooning beyond the scheduled mass ascents and Night Glows," the statement from organisers continues.
