AS Police record almost 300 e-scooter incidents in three months

The vast majority relate to private scooters and not those available in trial schemes

Avon and Somerset Police have recorded almost 300 incidents involving E-scooters since the start of the year.

It comes just days after we revealed some public e-scooters could soon be upgraded so they can't be ridden illegally.

It's worth noting though, the police figures relate largely to private e-scooters and are based on crime logs simply containing the word scooter, so it cannot be known for sure in what capacity a scooter was involved in each incident.

In January 77 incidents were logged across the force area, the same number in February and 131 last month in March.

E-scooter trials are currently ongoing across Bristol, Bath, Taunton, Yeovil, Crewkerne and Chard.

Across Bristol there have been several complaints about scooters being either ridden on pavements which is illegal, or parked up on them in large numbers, blocking the way.

Off the back of that on Monday (26/04) we spoke to Voi Technology who run the Bristol and Bath trials.

The company told us they are working on camera technology that would allow the scooters to sense danger in a way similar to many modern cars, and then slow down if they get too close to pedestrians for example, or pavements, or potholes.

It is hoped the tech would stop people illegally riding on pavements, but it is worth noting the vast majority of the incidents logged by Avon and Somerset Police have involved privately owned scooters and not those run by Voi or any other rental company.

Of the 285 incidents logged by the police this year, only 31 have involved trial scooters.

That works out as around 11 percent.
