The group behind Troon’s new skate park say they are building a community in the area that helps offer alternative sports to all generations.

Both Robbie Shirley, and Kellee Quinn-Lynch fought for a decade to have the park built after noticing there was nothing on offer for kids who weren’t interested in mainstream sports like football, golf, and Rugby.

Now known as Sunset Beach Skate Park as Robbie and Kellee aim to replicate a similar aesthetic to the famous Santa Monica Skate Park, it has had an ‘incredible’ response since the grand opening last month.

However, the work isn’t over for the pair as they want to continue developing and possibly expanding the park.

They’ve started putting on lessons for children over the summer to encourage a new generation of skaters, and bikers in Troon, and are looking into doing the same for adults in the future.

That’s as well as exploring ways of installing a water tap next to the park and beach in a bid to reduce the amount of litter and single use plastic by the coastline.

Robbie is telling Greatest Hits Radio about the parks first month in operation and future plans.

He said: “The response so far from the public and the skate park users has been incredible

“My son was born at the end of 2012, and I quickly realised there wasn’t an awful lot for him to do when he grows up if he’s into the same things I was. I grew up in Troon and me and my friends were always out on our BMXs and didn’t have anywhere to go with them.

“We have a few plans in store for future products. We’re trying to install a fresh water drinking tap to reduce the amount of single use plastics being used at the skate park and beach.

“We’re trying get some picnic benches, a seating area, some fencing around the front to protect anyone walking by, and hopefully in the future a barbecue zone.”

Kellee added: “I’m so glad we’ve managed to get this skate park in the area, and we can’t thank the council enough for helping.

“Robbie and I were both passionate about building a space that was about inclusivity and for children who weren’t into sports like golf, football, rugby which the services in the town already catered for.

“With the addition of hopefully a new social area and some other plans, we have high hopes that this can become more a community hub.”
