A local Ayrshire golfer has secured a place at this month’s Open Championship after an impressive display in final qualifying at Dundonald Links.
Local lad Michael Stewart from Troon put in the best performance at golf’s oldest competition to seal his place at Royal Liverpool Golf Club that’s hosted in July 20-23.
The 33-year-old challenge tour player said the feeling didn’t feel real yet as he posted the news on his Twitter page to thank everyone for the support.
He said: “Still hasn’t quite sunk in yet but absolutely buzzing.
“Thanks to everyone who came out yesterday to show support & cheer me on.”
Final Qualifying for the Open Championship took place at the same time across four UK venues on July 4, with Stewart winning the Dundonald Links event thanks to an impeccable second round.
He and the other qualifiers from across the country can now look forward to playing at one of golf’s most iconic tournaments.
Elsewhere, fellow countryman an amateur golfer Calum Scott put in a solid display for the majority of the tournament. However, the 19-year old from Nairn failed to qualify by an agonising single stroke.
Similarly, Kirkhill’s Craig Ross kept pace throughout until he fell agonisingly after a five-hole sudden death against Robertson.
Stewart will be joined by Falkirk golfer Graeme Robertson later this month at the 151st Open Championship where they will rub shoulders with the likes of Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm.
