Prestwick skating star says everyone should get chance to glide on the ice

A figure skater from Prestwick who won a bronze medal in Boston at the weekend is telling us other young people in his home town deserve the same chance at success.

Lewis Gibson bagged the prize at the World Figure Skating Championships with his partner Lilah Fear on Saturday.

Realising the dream

The 30-year-old was inspired to put on his skates for the first time when he watched Torvil and Dean on the TV show, Dancing On Ice.

He told Greatest Hits Radio: "It's a unique sport and caters to many different people with different interests but it is still a sport which can get people active, I think that's very important.

"To have the option for people to choose from is really important, my introduction was through a TV show but others need to have the chance to go to an ice rink.2

Equal opportunities

He first started training at Ayr ice rink which closed down in 2023 before going on to train with Lilah at the Ice Academy of Montreal.

He added: "It's worrying some people may never have the same opportunities I did.

"It's a more expensive sport to begin but once you get out there the feeling is like no other.

"I would love for everyone to know the feeling of getting out on the ice."
