On Monday evening, locals spotted the area between W.H Smith and the Post Office on King Street cordoned off by officers.
After a period of uncertainty, it’s now emerged that a 41-year-old man was assaulted on the street. He was taken to hospital once emergency services arrived at the scene at around 5:30pm
Police are now investigating the incident and asking potential witnesses to get in touch with information.
A spokesperson said: “Around 5.30pm on Monday, 11 December, police were called to a report of a 41-year-old man assaulted on King Street, Kilmarnock. He was taken to Crosshouse Hospital and enquiries are ongoing into the assault.
"Anyone with information should contact 101 with reference 2593 of 11 December."
