Nicola Sturgeon pays tribute to Ayrshire journalist and uncle, Iain Ferguson
Iain's media career started in Prestwick in 1971
Nicola Sturgeon has paid tribute to her uncle and prolific Ayrshire journalist, Iain Ferguson, after he passed away.
Mr Ferguson, who died following a short illness, was the editor of several publications including the Irvine Times, Ayr Advertiser and Sunday Mail.
The reporter got his start in 1971 at the news agency, Brenard Press, at Prestwick Airport and ended up becoming assistant editor at the Daily Record in late 2000.
He also went on to serve as the head of PR at Ayr Racecourse.
Former First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, wrote on Twitter: "My wonderful Uncle Iain known to many in the journalist world, has passed away. Iain was the editor of several Ayrshire papers in his younger days...
"I hero-worshipped Iain when I was a wee girl and have looked up to him all my life. He and I shared a love of books and constantly texted each other recommendations. I will miss him so much."
Speaking during a 2009 interview, the Prestwick man said his work on reporting on the Celtic Boys Club scandal in the mid 90’s was a key point in his career.
He also hosted and produced the West Sound Sports Show on two separate occasions, from 1987 to 1989, and 2003 to 2005 and said his role at the racecourse was something he “enjoyed doing greatly.”
