Drivers are now being diverted to the B714 with SGN saying it's too early to say how long repairs will take.

A spokesperson said: "Our engineers are attending a high volume gas escape in the A737 and will shortly begin repairs to our gas network.

"Due to the location of our gas main and to ensure everyone's safety, the A737 has been closed between Hillend roundabout and Old Monk Castle.

"A diversion route is in place for motorists travelling in both directions via the B714.

"We understand this is a busy route and we apologise for the inconvenience the road closure will be causing.

"At the moment it’s too early to say how long our repairs will take to complete but will be working as quickly as possible to get the road open again."
