A 46-year-old man has died after being knocked down by a car near Beith in North Ayrshire.

The man was hit by a black Land Rover Discovery Sport around 10.45pm on Wednesday whilst he walking on the A737.

The road was closed for around six hours to allow for investigation work to be carried out.

Police are appealing for CCTV or dashcam footage which could help with their inquiries.

It's the third fatal crash in Ayrshire in less than a week after a 17-year-old girl was killed on the A714 near Girvan, and a 24-year-old woman died in a collision on the B7038 Ayr road in Kilmarnock.

Road Policing Sergeant Chris McColm said on Wednesday's crash: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died and our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

“We are appealing to anyone who was in the area and saw what happened to contact us as your information could be vital.

“I would also ask anyone with any dash-cam or CCTV footage that could help with our investigation to get in touch.”

"Anyone who can help is asked to call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 3948 of 20 December."
