The bus driver who died following a horror crash on the A77 last week has been named.
On Monday 14 August, a white Ford Transit van and the number 4 Stagecoach West service collided on the A77 near Galston.
Four people were taken to hospital following the incident; the two drivers and two passengers on the bus.
The two passengers were later discharged but the 23-year-old driver of the bus and the 42-year-old driver of the van were described as having serious ‘life threatening injuries’.
On Sunday Police Scotland announced that the bus driver had died in hospital.
Stagecoach West have now named the 23-year-old as Gordon Stirling from Kilmarnock.
Fiona Doherty, Managing Director of Stagecoach West Scotland said: “It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of our colleague Gordon Stirling. Gordon was the driver of the service 4 bus which was involved in a road traffic incident with another vehicle on Monday 14 August on the A77.
"The whole Stagecoach team is devasted about this and we all send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. We are also supporting those colleagues at Stagecoach who knew him.
"We thank the emergency services for their response and the NHS team at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. A full investigation is under way into this incident.”
Police investigation continues
The transit driver remains in hospital with serious injuries, but his condition is described as stable.
Inspector Craig Beaver of Ayrshires Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Stirling at what is a very difficult time for them.
Our investigation into the circumstances of the crash are continuing. I would ask anyone with information, including dash-cam footage, who has not already spoken to officers to please get in touch.
