Bus driver fighting for life after A77 horror crash with van

A white Ford Transit van and a single-decker Stagecoach bus collided leaving 4 people in hospital.

A bus driver has been left fighting for his life after a horror crash on the A77 in East Ayrshire last night.

At around 5:30pm Monday 14 August on the A77 near Galston, a white Ford Transit van and a single-decker Stagecoach bus collided leaving four people in hospital.

Those directly involved in the crash were taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow with serious life-threatening injuries. The driver of the bus, a 23-year-old man is described as being in a critical condition.

The driver of the Ford Transit, a 42-year-old man is in a serious but stable condition.

There were two passengers onboard the bus during the time of the collision; a 19-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman. Both were also taken to hospital as a precaution but later discharged.

Stagecoach have sent their thoughts to the employee and the rest of the people involved in the crash.

A spokesperson from Stagecoach West Scotland said: “We confirm that one of our vehicles, the service 4, was involved in an incident with another vehicle on Monday 14 August on the A77 near Fenwick.

"The drivers of both vehicles were transported to hospital. There were two passengers on board the bus who were both treated by ambulance teams at the scene before being released.

"Our thoughts are with our colleague, passengers and the other driver involved. A full investigation is underway into this accident.”

Emergency services were forced to close the road immediately, and it wasn’t re-opened until 3:30am on Tuesday 15 August.

While officers continue to establish the circumstances of the accident, they are appealing for anyone who was in the area during the time of the crash to come forward if they have any footage.

Inspector Craig Beaver said: “Our enquiries to establish the full circumstances are ongoing, and we are appealing to anyone who may have seen what happened to come forward.

“In addition, if you were driving in the area around the time of this crash and have dash-cam footage that could assist with our investigation, please get in touch.”
