A pub in East Ayrshire has shared the sad news to their social media of a fire that has torn through the tavern area of their popular venue.

The Weston in Kilmaurs is known for it’s warm and welcoming atmosphere making it a staple venue in the local community.

But last night the pub’s landlord, John Carins was met with horror when he was woken by the fire alarm. He ventured downstairs to search for the cause and saw smoke coming out from under the bar door.

After grabbing his dog, he ran to safety and phoned the fire brigade.

In the wake of the fire, The Weston team took to social media to share the devastating impact of the fire on the bar area, showing blackened and damaged worksurfaces, bottes and furniture.

The post was flooded with hundreds of comments from locals sharing their love and support.

John spoke with us exclusively about the reaction to the fire: “The reaction from folks has been incredible.

“The amount of people that’s downstairs that are currently helping to try to clean up the mess is unbelievable and to be honest it’s a bit heartwarming.

It’s touching to know that the community that we love, and we support are in return supporting us during this difficult time.”

The Weston has become a top choice for local punters due to its commitment to giving back to the area.

John said: “We love our community, we organise community events for them like, Easter events, Christmas events, monthly littler picks.

“This year we fundraised over the Christmas period for our community centre and raised £580 for them.

“We really love our community, and I think one of the reasons why we’ve won numerous awards over the years is our community interaction.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 7.28am on Monday, 30 December, to reports of a commercial building fire on Main Street, Kilmaurs.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the scene, where firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.

“There were no reported casualties, and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”
