A major revamp of Aberdeen's Union Street is being delayed until spring 2026, council documents have revealed.

Papers going before the finance and resources committee next week state a number of factors have led to the project being pushed back.

The works have resulted in sections of Union Street between Bridge Street and Market Street being fenced off while the concrete is dug up to carry out the streetscaping works.

Its part of the city centre and beach masterplan which will see the pavements widened, a two-way cycle track installed and a new entrance constructed to complement the Aberdeen Market.

However, a number of complications have led to the project being delayed, with documents revealing a 2025 completion date is looking unlikely.

Papers going before the committee next week read: "Since commencement on site, additional works associated with the removal of tram sleepers embedded within the existing concrete basecourse, an undocumented redundant water main and less than required contractor productivity have resulted in programme delays.

"The magnitude of delay and possible mitigations are still being discussed with Hub North Scotland, however, it is clear that the works will now not be completed in 2025 but are more likely to be Spring 2026."

Scottish Conservative North East MSP Douglas Lumsden said the update is "extremely disappointing" and raised concerns about the businesses along the stretch of road works.

The documents will be discussed at the finance meeting on Wednesday 26 March.
