Storm Éowyn: Amber and yellow warnings issued for North and North East
The First Minister has urged people not to travel.
Storm Éowyn is bringing red, amber and yellow weather warnings to parts of Scotland as forecasters warn of major disruption.
Grampian, Tayside, and the Highlands have been issued with an Amber warning for wind on Friday afternoon into Saturday morning.
The Met Office said peak gusts of up to 80mph could affect some areas, and up to 90mph gusts could be recorded along the coast.
A yellow snow alert also covers part of Eastern and Northern Scotland for the majority of Friday.
The forecaster warned there is a good chance power cuts may occur and strong winds could damage buildings.
It is likely there will be significant disruption to travel across the country.
Rare red warning
A rare red alert for wind, which warns of "very dangerous conditions" and gusts of up to 100mph, has been issued across the central belt.
The warning will come into force on Friday morning when Storm Éowyn hits.
Forecasters are warning of flying debris resulting in danger to life, as well as "very dangerous" driving conditions because of fallen trees.
The First Minister gave a statement at the Scottish Parliament urging people not to travel in areas covered by the red weather warning.
During First Minister's Questions, John Swinney said: "We have to be clear, people should not travel and Police Scotland will issue a formal 'do not travel' advisory notice shortly."
Mr Swinney revealed the Scottish Government's resilience and emergency system was activated this morning to assist frontline responders.
He continued: "I will chair a meeting of the resilience room shortly after First Minister's Questions today and further advice will be issued to the public.
"Red weather warnings like this are very rare. Our message is simple: please follow the advice from the met office and the police, take this seriously and stay safe."
