The official cause of death of two sisters who went missing in Aberdeen has been recorded as drowning, it is being reported.

Eliza and Henrietta Huszti, both aged 32, went missing on 7 January when they were last sighted on CCTV walking along Victoria Bridge before turning right down a footpath along the River Dee.

Their disappearance sparked a major search of the area lasting around three weeks.

On 31 January, their bodies were recovered from the water not far from where they went missing.

The bodies of the sisters, who were originally from Hungary, were formally identified the following week.

It has been recorded on their death certificates that their cause of death was drowning.

Police said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Eliza and Henrietta were last sighted at 2.12am on 7 January walking along Victoria Bridge before turning right down a path which led to Aberdeen Boat Club on the banks of the River Dee.

Detectives later revealed they were spotted on CCTV in the same area the day before with backpacks on, before returning to their flat on Charlotte Street.

A major search operation was launched involving divers, police dogs, drones and specialist officers.

Officers stressed the search was made difficult due to the tidal conditions of the river.

The search of the river was called off on 27 January.

On 31 January, police received a report of a body in the water near Queen Elizabeth Bridge, not far from where they went missing.

Later that day a second body was recovered from the water near Victoria Bridge.

Police confirmed on 11 February that formal identification had taken place and the two bodies recovered from the river were Eliza and Henrietta.
