North Sea oil rig worker airlifted after emergency

An offshore worker was taken into the care of paramedics after being airlifted off a North Sea oil rig following an emergency.

The coastguard was alerted around 1.30pm yesterday.

It then dispatched a search and rescue helicopter from Sumburgh to the installation off Shetland.

Lerwick Coastguard Rescue Team was on hand to assist.

A statement “The HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Sumburgh caried out a medical airlift from an offshore installation off Shetland.

“HM Coastguard was contacted at about 1.30pm on 8 January.

“The person was passed into the care of Scottish Ambulance Service.

“Lerwick Coastguard Rescue Team assisted.”
