The owners of an award winning north east bakery have embarked on a new journey into the luxury drinks market.

Paul Allan, managing director of Murdoch Allan Bakery, alongside his wife Katrina, have launched Still Spirited, a premium Scottish vodka.

The entrepreneur first tried his hand at distilling throughout lockdown and, after successfully creating a variety of spirits, decided to launch from within the bakery headquarters in Hatton.

Paul said: “As a baker to trade, I used my knowledge and understanding on how to combine different ingredients to create the smoothest spirit possible, and I was delighted when I successfully perfected my own vodka and gin."

Starting out

The spirit is currently stocked in independent retailers and bars across Aberdeenshire, with hopes of stocking the product in supermarkets soon.

“Once we knew there would be a demand for the drink, we had larger distilling facilities built at our bakery headquarters in Hatton to enable us to make batches of Still Spirited.

“Ironically I don’t drink, so Katrina has been in charge of the tasting process. We are really pleased with the smoothness of the end result.”

The single malt vodka is batch-distilled at 40% ABV, made from locally sourced ingredients such as malted wheat and water.

Katrina added: “Sustainability is key to our bakery produce, and we have continued this ethos in the creation of Still Spirited, using the finest locally sourced ingredients, alongside a very clean distilling process.

“The end result is an extremely smooth product with hints of vanilla and toffee, without the burning sensation you would normally associate with vodka, which allows people to sip and savour its taste simply on its own over ice, or alternatively it can be enjoyed with a mixer of choice.”
