A man has died after falling overboard from the Belfast to Cairnryan ferry.

The alarm was raised yesterday evening as the Stena Service was nearing the Dumfries and Galloway port.

The man was pulled from the water by the ferry's own fast rescue craft, before being airflifted to hospital in Ayr, but he couldn't be saved.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Inquiries to establish the full circumstances of the incident remain ongoing and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
