Ellon is to lose its last physical bank after a Bank of Scotland announced a spate of closures.

Branches in Banff and Buckie will also close later this year.

Bank of Scotland says the decisions have been made because of a decline in footfall as more people turn to online services.

Ellon's branch in The Square will shut on September 10, while the Low Street bank in Banff will close on July 30 in the latest blows for the town.

Meanwhile, the branch in Buckie will bring down the shutters on August 1.

Banff and Buchan MP David Duguid said: “Disappointed to hear that Bank of Scotland has decided to close its branches in Banff, Buckie and Ellon, among others.

“This follows news not long ago that it was stopping the mobile banking service in places like Turriff and Fochabers.

“I have already sought a meeting with Bank of Scotland to discuss how it is going to help those customers who are still dependent on these branches - particularly those in areas of poor digital connectivity.”
