Scott Booth "delighted" to become Aberdeen Women's new manager
Ex-Dons striker returns to Granite City
Scott Booth has returned home to Aberdeen to lead the Women’s side.
The 52-year-old needs no introductions to the Red Army, having spent ten years at Pittodrie as a player, notching over 225 games and scoring 70 goals across two spells.
He will officially take up his post on 30th October.
“I am delighted to be returning to my old Club and taking on this exciting opportunity”, said the new AFC Women boss.
“Having spoken to the Director of Football and the wider Board I share their vision for the future of the Women’s programme and I am looking forward to playing my part in this project going forward.
"We look to challenge ourselves to deliver success"
“I know there is a talented young group of players here and I am looking forward to working with them and the fantastic staff to build upon the great work carried out in recent seasons as we look to challenge ourselves to deliver success.”
His playing career started and ended in the Granite City, with spells at Borussia Dortmund, FC Utrecht, Vitesse Arnhem and FC Twente in between. He also won 22 caps for Scotland, scoring six goals.
When he retired from playing, he spent some time in the media before moving into management with the Stenhousemuir men’s side, spending twelve months with the SPFL League One side before switching to the Women’s game and Glasgow City.
Booth enjoyed huge success as Glasgow City boss
He enjoyed a trophy-laden spell with City, leading them to six consecutive SWPL1 titles and two Scottish Cup triumphs. He also led the side to the quarter-final of the 2019-2020 UEFA Champions League, their joint-best finish in European competition, before being eliminated by eventual finalists Wolfsburg.
He was tempted away from Glasgow to join WSL side Birmingham City in June 2021, and also had a two-year spell with Championship side Lewes FC, leaving in May of this year. He returned to assist current City boss, and former protégée, Leanne Ross this summer, but the lure of leading the Dons was too much.
Commenting on the appointment of Scott, AFC Director of Football, Steven Gunn, said: “We’re very pleased to have Scott on board. His appointment is an important one for the continued development of AFC Women.
“Scott shares our ambitions for the women’s programme and given his strong connection with Aberdeen is keen to play a vital role in helping us fulfil that vision.
“He brings with him a wealth of experience and an excellent reputation at the top level in the women’s game and we look forward to working with Scott for the remainder of this season and beyond.”
