Local Elections across the East Midlands

Counts are taking place at 27 authorities in the region, plus there are mayoral elections in Mansfield and Leicester

As results come in across the East Midlands through the day off the back of yesterday's local council elections, we will keep you updated.

Most notably the Tories have lost control of North West Leicestershire overnight. That authority is now under no overall control with Labour int he majority. The Conservatives lost 8 seats. Leicester South MP Jonathan Ashworth says the result there leaves them in a great position going forward claiming, "these are the sorts of constituencies that decide general elections".

Elsewhere Labour have retained both Bassetlaw in Nottinghamshire and Bolsover in Derbyshire with both areas seeing a gain in seats for the party.

The Ashfield Independents Party has gained a bigger majority there and Lib Dems have retained control of Hinckley and Bosworth.

Mansfield's Andy Abrahams has been re-elected as the town's mayor. His nearest rival Conservative Andre Camileri polled 5,832 votes and Mansfield Independents candidate Mick Barton came in third place with 4,992.

Labour has gained Erewash Borough Council from the Conservatives. The party now has a majority on this council for the first time in 20 years.

The Conservatives have held on to Blaby by the skin of their teeth. They hold there majority by one seat.

Elsewhere Labour have gained both Broxtowe in Nottinghamshire and North East Derbyshire. Both councils were previously under no overall control.

Labour's Sir Peter Soulsby has been re-elected as Leicester Mayor with 35,002 votes.

The Conservatives have lost Newark & Sherwood District Council to no overall control. They previously held a majority of 29 seats on the authority but now have 14.

The Labour party has again maintained a majority in Nottingham City. There is now no conservative representation on the Council for the first time ever.

There's also a hold for the Conservatives in Rushcliffe- despite losing 5 seats.

Elsewhere, the Tories have lost control of Charnwood. After a tight race the council's left under no overall control.

Labour has won overall control of Mansfield District Council, passing the threshold of 19 seats. The party now has 20 seats with just nine results left to declare.

The Lib Dems have held onto Oadby and Wigston, despite losing 5 seats.
