People in Leicestershire are now able to get their jabs from the comfort of their car as the county's first drive-thru centre opens today.

From Wednesday (February 2nd), local residents will be able to go to the grounds County Hall in Glenfield - on the outskirts of Leicester city.

Those who book their jabs in the centre will remain in their car while the vaccine is given to them.

Drivers of the care will be advised to wait at the centre for 15 minutes to ensure there are no immediate side-effects to the jab. Passengers being vaccinated do not need to wait and can drive away from the centre.

Local NHS authorities in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are hoping that the opening of the new centre will prove popular and reach those who had not gotten their doses.

Speaking about the new centre, Executive Director of Nursing, Quality and Performance and Deputy Chief Executive of the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Clinical Commissioning Groups, Dr Caroline Trevithick said it was to help as many people as possible.

“Finding new and inventive ways of working has been key since the start of the covid pandemic. Creating a drive through vaccine clinic is just one example of thinking outside the box, making it quick and easy for people to get the jab," she said.

“You can simply turn up, or if you prefer you can book a timed slot in advance. It’s designed to fit around people’s busy lives. Families will be able to get the vaccine together, from the comfort of their car, and drive off with confidence that they are now protected against Covid.”

The vaccination centre will be open every Wednesday to Sunday between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. People aged 12 and over can attend the centre to receive their first, second or booster doses.
