Worcestershire Pride returns as community still faces challenges
There will be live music, stalls and a parade as organisers tell of how important the event still is
Roads will be closed in Worcester today as the annual Pride event takes place.
Copenhagen Street will also be closed, with roads closures in place as deputy mayor Mel Allcott and Robin Walker MP will be leading the parade at 11am.
In the car park there will be a host of traders and live acts, as well as other businesses and community groups setting up stalls.
Mathew Skilbeck, one of the organisers, has said it's a reminder that the fight for equality is still going on.
“Hopefully one day we won't need a Pride," he said.
“We won't need to show what we've been through and how we are still tackling the challenges we are still facing.
“Even now in some countries around the world, it's illegal to be gay. This is why we need Pride, is to show what we've were fighting for, the rights we're fighting for.”
He added it’ll be an amazing event because it shows solidary across the LGBTQ plus community.
“It brings the whole community together. Only a few years ago we sadly lost a member of the LGBT community who was murdered in their home, which goes to show there's still hate and prejudice out there,” he said.
“So it’s nice to see the community coming together for Pride events like this.”
