Warwickshire school building closed after legionella bacteria found in water system
The school is looking at ways to deliver face to face learning for pupils in the meantime.
The opening of a new building at Hartshill Academy in Nuneaton has been delayed due traces of legionella bacteria found in the water system.
The move was supposed to take place on Monday (6 November), but there was a change in plans after the presence of the bacteria was discovered by Wates Construction, as part of their standard testing and building certification regime.
It is said to be isolated to the new building and that the system is being cleaned and will be re-tested before the move takes place.
The earliest date could now take place is Friday 17 November 2023.
School officials have said they are unable to fully move back into the previous school building, as this has been cleared of equipment, furniture and IT facilities.
In a letter to parents and carers, principal Lorraine Taylor said: "Thank you again for your support at this time, and please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused.
"We currently look forward to welcoming pupils and staff into the new building from Monday 20th November."
A Department for Education spokesperson said: "Wates Construction are working on eliminating the legionella bacteria in a controlled way.
"We are working closely with the trust to minimise disruption to pupils’ learning and ensure the new building is safe for pupils to return as soon as possible."
