The UK's oldest working cinema, located in Birmingham, has announced it will be opening its doors for the first time in nearly two years.

Located on Station Street in the city centre, The Electric cinema was forced to close their doors in March 2020.

Now, fans of cinema and vintage architecture will be able to indulge as the cinema announced it will reopen on Friday, January 21st.

After reopening in 2004 following a £250,000 renovation, the theatre shut down at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

As the country began to unlock during the summer of 2021, the cinema faced an uncertain future, as the 88 year lease to the building had ended, leaving the building potentially facing demolition.

However, the cinema came under new management in November 2021, saving the building and preserving one of the oldest picture theatres in the country.

The cinema is preparing for showing a variety of films for customers, with some requiring a specific projector for 35mm film which was used to show the first major Hollywood films.

Speaking about the reopening of the cinema, new owners Kate and Kevin Markwick are excited to welcome film buffs back to The Electric.

On a blog post, Kate said: "I want to be able to share our love of cinema with Birmingham and also share in Birmingham’s love for The Electric. I hope I can do it justice and make them proud – I will certainly try my hardest!"
