A 16 year old boy has been arrested after a 6 year old girl was sexually assaulted in a Birmingham park on Saturday.

It happened in Rowheath Park, in the Bourneville area, at around midday on September 18.

The child was in the playground with her family when she was momentarily lured into nearby woodland where she was attacked.

The boy was arrested yesterday (September 19) in Birmingham and is currently being questioned.

Extra officers have been in the area over the past few days. The family of the girl is getting specialist support.

Detective Inspector Matt Stone, of West Midlands Police, said:

“This arrest is a significant development as our investigation continues at pace.

“I’d still urge anyone with any information, who hasn’t yet contacted us, to do as soon as possible.

“There have been lots of comments on social media. I thank people for sharing our appeal, and those who got in touch with information.

"However I’d ask that people do not speculate on the circumstances, its unhelpful to our investigation and distressing for those involved.”
