Man jailed for racially aggravated assault at Warwickshire hospital
It happened at the George Elliot hospital in Nuneaton.
A man who racially abused and then assaulted a hospital worker will spend the next few months behind bars.
Azrar Choudary was jailed for 16 weeks at Warwick Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (23 November) after pleading guilty to racially aggravated assault.
The 40-year-old of no fixed abode was arrested on Tuesday after officers responded to a drunken man causing a nuisance at George Eliot Hospital and refusing to leave.
When they arrived staff at the hospital told the officers how Choudary had assaulted and racially abused a member of staff.
After being checked over by a doctor and declared medically fit, Choudary was taken into custody.
He had to be restrained the whole time while officers waited for a police van to arrive.
As they tried to get Chodary into the van he continued to racially abuse the member of staff and assaulted him again.
PC Muhammed Ali from the Warwickshire Police Patrol Investigation Unit said: “I welcome the sentence handed down to Choudary for this offence.
“He was arrested, charged, and convicted within 48 hours of the offence occurring and I hope this shows that assaults on emergency workers will not be tolerated by police and the courts.
“The force is committed to protecting emergency workers and we’ll always look to prosecute people who think it is acceptable to attack people trying to provide a service and care to the members of the public.”
George Eliot Hospital’s chief operating officer Robin Snead said: “Our staff work incredibly hard to look after people who need our care and we have zero tolerance of them being abused, discriminated against or assaulted in any way.
“We thank Warwickshire police for their quick and decisive action and will always work them to seek prosecution for those who perpetrate these disgraceful attacks.”
