Police investigating a hit and run in Handsworth Wood yesterday evening (9 January) have arrested a man.

Shortly before 7pm, a woman was struck by a Ford Focus on College Road.

She suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the Ford stopped to speak to two members of the public before getting back into his car and driving off.

A 23-year-old man was arrested from his home address in Birmingham at 11pm last night on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop following a collision and driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.

He remains in police custody today.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said:

“We have spoken to a number of witnesses but we are continuing to appeal for anyone with information to get in touch.

“In particular I would urge the two men who spoke to the driver to contact us as soon as possible as they hold vital information that could help our investigation."
