Police in the West Midlands have arrested a man in connection with a fatal attack that took place in Ladywood.

The victim, now named as Robert West, aged 49, was found outside the Cross Keys Banqueting Suite in the early hours of Monday morning (February 21st).

Despite emergency services being called to the scene to treat Mr West, when officers arrived on the scene, little could be done and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives investigating the case have since made an arrest, with a 43-year-old man from Birmingham being detained on suspicion of murder and is currently being questioned.

A cordon currently remains in place at Steward Street in Ladywood whilst police continue with enquiries.

Mr West's family have since been made aware of his passing and, in a statement, paid tribute to their father and husband.

"Robert West, also known as Bob Fresh to most, was a loving husband, a proud father, a son, an uncle, brother and a loyal friend to many. He was the kind of person who would go the extra mile for those he loved and cared for," he said.

“We are all in shock, devastated and truly heartbroken. He will be dearly missed forever by all. Rest easy king. Gone but never forgotten.”

Speaking about the case, Detective Inspector Ade George from the homicide unit of West Midlands Police also appealed for information from witnesses or CCTV in the area.

"Our sympathies remain with Robert’s family after his brutal death and we continue to support them in their time of grief," he said.

"This arrest is a significant development in our investigation, but we are still asking for anyone with information to come forward.”
